A book with musical folklore of the Old Believers of North-Western Belarus has been published

In three countries — Poland, Lithuania and Latvia – they are planning to present a book with the musical folklore of the Old Believers of Northwestern Belarus. It was named “And they used to sing like that,” said Volha Baryshnikava, a Belarusian ethnomusicologist, a teacher of traditional singing, a musician, and a laureate of international competitions.

“The book is called “And they used to sing like that. Musical folklore of the Old Believers of Northwestern Belarus”. This is a book about songs that are no longer sung, but were once sung in the western part of the modern Vitsebsk region. And mainly among the Russian immigrants, Old Believers, who have been living next to Belarusians for more than 300 years, share their culture and, at the same time, draw elements of Belarusian folklore. Therefore, this book is about the result of the interaction of Old Believers and Belarusians, the result of musical interaction,” she said.

A crowdfunding campaign was organized for the publication of the book last year, which was successful. “We managed to collect the necessary amount long before the official collection was closed,” Volha Baryshnikava noted.
