On the eve of the eighth festival “Direction East” began in the capital of Podlasie. American actors arrived from Santa Barbara in California brought to Bialystok an adaptation of the Russian classical drama “Uncle Vanya” by Chekhov.
Martyna Zaneuska, Deputy director of the Alexander Wegerka Bialystok Drama Theater, says: “This is the news of our current festival. The name of our festival is “Direction East”, so previously our attention was primarily directed to the East. And theater groups were invited from the East. But this time we received a very interesting offer from a theater from the USA from California with an interpretation of Anton Chekhov’s play. It’s like a combination of Western and Eastern culture.”
Director of the Bialystok Drama Theater Piotr Poltorak: “We have 7 performances. Every potential viewer will find something for themselves.”
There are 6 more theater projects related to oriental themes ahead. Traditionally, Belarusians perform at the festival. After 2020, these are independent theater projects. On October 5, they will show “What are you going for, wolf?”according to the writer Eva Vezhnavets.
