Belarusians abroad continue to work on the topic of Stalinist repressions. The presentation of a new documentary movie “The Forest” about the crimes of the Stalinist system took place at the “Witryna Domu Wschodniego” in Warsaw.
The movie is based on the memories of people whose relatives were shot in the 30s in the Homel region in the Novobelitsky forest. The movie explores the themes of fear, loss and memory, showing how these repressions affected the fate of individuals and entire families.
“In 2021, the authorities began excavations in this forest. And this topic is still relevant today. Also in 2020, I left my video archive in Belarus when I left. And a year ago I received this archive. I saw that there is a video that can reveal this topic,” says director Maria Bulavinskaya.
According to her, the current authorities in Belarus are trying to whitewash the NKVD and blame the Nazis of the Second World War for the shootings in the Novobelitsky forest.
