The Prosecutor General’s Office wants the Brest Fortress to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a monument to the Great Patriotic War.
At the same time, back in 2004, a dossier was compiled on the Brest Fortress as a cross-border fortification. After that, she was included in the UNESCO tentative list, from which she was later excluded. Until 2021, there was a moratorium on adding sites related to military history events to the UNESCO list. The exception was the concentration camp”Auschwitz.”
Now the Prosecutor General’s Office wants the Brest Fortress to be included in the UNESCO list not as a fort of the XIX century, but as a memorial to the Great Patriotic War, “symbolizing the protection of the world from Nazism and the fight against the unleashed policy of genocide against our people.”
