Treasures of the Middle Ages were found in Podlasie: a sword from Suprasl and coins from Choroszcz

A solemn press conference was held at the Bialystok Hasbach Palace, at which the Podlaskie Voivodeship monument keeper Adam Musiuk presented two discoverers of archaeological sites awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Poland.

Szczepan Skibicki found a unique sword of the tenth century – a real relic of the Middle Ages. “During a recreational dive in the river, I accidentally found a sword. I kept it in water so that it would be isolated from the air and no further corrosion would occur. This is such an important find that in fact, if we talk about the early Middle Ages, we know very little about the territory of Podlasie. I hope this thing will tell its story, because now it is in the process of conservation,” he said.

Wojciech Banasik, in turn, found a treasure trove that contained, among other things, as many as 49 early medieval coins. “Walking through the field, I noticed coins-one, another, in total I managed to find several dozen. I immediately realized that this was a very important find, because it was immediately obvious that these coins were medieval. This is the only treasure of Western European coins, and besides there were German, Anglo-Saxon, Czech and Hungarian coins,” Banasik said.

During the meeting, Adam Musiuk stressed the importance for the residents of the region to report all archeological discoveries to the Voivodeship Keeper of Monuments. Accordingly, all the finds remained in Podlasie and after conservation will be exhibited in the Podlasie Museum and the Army Museum in Bialystok.
