Human rights activists analyzed the human rights situation in Belarus in September. They conclude that a “critically high level of repression” persisted in the country.
As before, politically motivated criminal prosecution remains an urgent threat to all those who took part in protest actions or spoke critically about the political situation in the country or against regime officials.
Arbitrary repressions against citizens for the exercise of civil rights continue. In September, it became known about at least 429 cases of politically motivated repression. Of these, at least 176 administrative cases were considered by the courts.
The lists of individuals and formations allegedly involved in “extremist” and “terrorist” activities and “extremist materials” continue to be updated.
At the end of September, 1,317 political prisoners were in captivity in Belarus. However, in early October, for the first time in a long time, their number became less than 1300.
