The Polish judge Tomasz Szmydt said he had asked for asylum in Belarus on May 6 during a press conference in Minsk at the pro-government BelTA news agency. At the same time, he made accusations against the Polish government and praised the Lukashenka authorities.
In Poland Schmidt has been involved in a major political scandal since 2019. He was part of a group of people who persecuted judges who were disloyal to the then government. The group of “haters” was associated with the leadership of the Ministry of Justice.
The Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called the news about Szmydt shocking. Talking to journalists, he also remembered that there was already one traitor in Poland.
The press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Anatol Glaz, said that the asylum application of the Polish judge Tomasz Schmidt (Schmyt) will be considered.
“At the moment, I can unequivocally say that this appeal will be carefully considered by our side in accordance with Belarusian legislation,” the response of the Glaz is given in the telegram channel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In December 2021, the military Emil Czeczko fled to Belarus. He accused the Polish authorities of murdering migrants. However, in March 2022, he was found hanged in Minsk.
