At least 11 political prisoners with disabilities remain behind bars in Belarus

There are at least 11 people with disabilities in detention in Belarus today. Such statistics were provided by Belarusian human rights defenders on the International Day of People with Disabilities.

People with disabilities are a separate vulnerable group in places of detention. In order to fully communicate with the environment, they need additional conditions, since detention is perceived to be tougher for a person. For these people, such conditions often turn out to be torture than for others.

There are no specialized human rights organizations in Belarus today that would deal with the rights of people with disabilities.

The International Day of People with Disabilities is celebrated on the third of December. It was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992 to raise awareness and identify measures to improve the situation of people with disabilities and ensure their equal opportunities with other people.
