At least 55 governments around the world are using travel restrictions as part of their repressive tactics against alleged political opponents, according to a Freedom House report.
Deprivation of citizenship, prohibition of entry, confiscation of passports and denial of consular services are among the methods used by authoritarian regimes to restrict the freedom of movement of people who are considered a threat.
The report was compiled on the basis of interviews with 31 people from Belarus, India, Nicaragua, Rwanda and Saudi Arabia, who “experienced the control of mobility on their own,” Freedom House reports.
