Belarus retains leadership in the number of journalists in prison

By the end of 2024, Belarus retained a sad leadership among European countries in the number of journalists in prison.

 So, as of December 31, there were 44 of them. Such data are provided in the annual report of the partner organizations of the Council of Europe platform for promoting the protection of journalism and the safety of journalists.

A similar report for 2023 reported 37 Belarusian journalists in prison. It was also the highest rate in Europe. Thus, their number has increased by almost 19% in a year.

It is noted that as of December 31, 2024, 30 journalists were imprisoned in Azerbaijan, 29 in Russia, 28 in the occupied territories of Ukraine, 27 in Turkey and 1 in Georgia.
