New trial of former employees of the portal Tut.by begins in Minsk

On March 4, the trial in absentia of former employees of the information portal Tut.by closed by the authorities has begun in the Minsk City Court. 

According to the Human rights center Viasna, Volha Loika, former editor of the Economics and Politics Department, Alena Talkacheva, correspondent, and Katsiaryna Tkachenka, legal adviser, will be tried in absentia. Their trial will be closed. As well as the trial of these defendants, which took place in July last year. The women are abroad.

Loika, Talkacheva and Tkachenka are charged under four articles of the Criminal Code. This is the organization of actions that grossly violate public order, calls for sanctions, incitement of hostility, tax evasion.

The Minsk City Court judge Valiantsina Ziankevich began considering the case under the same articles for the first time on July 15, 2024. The outcome of the review remained unknown, but human rights activists do not rule out that the case was returned to the prosecutor. On the website of the Supreme Court, Loika, Tkachenka and Talkacheva are not included in the list of citizens who are being investigated in absentia.
