Nobel laureates asked Trump to help release political prisoners in Belarus

A group of Nobel laureates has appealed to US President Donald Trump and other world leaders to immediately ensure the release of all political prisoners in Belarus, reports svaboda.org.

According to the appeal, there are currently more than 1,400 political prisoners in Belarusian prisons, among them presidential candidates, teachers, doctors, workers, as well as Nobel Peace Prize laureate, human rights activist Ales Bialiatski. It is noted that seriously ill and elderly people are among the prisoners, and their conditions of detention can be described as inhuman. Several political prisoners have already died in prison.

The call for the release of political prisoners and an end to repression is addressed to the authorities of Belarus. The signatories of the appeal urge US President Donald Trump and the leaders of the European Union to take urgent and decisive measures to free political prisoners, and public figures and all “people of conscience” to support the campaign for their release.

The letter was signed, in particular, by Nobel Prize laureates in literature Svetlana Alexievich and Herta Muller, Nobel Peace Prize laureates Oleksandra Matviichuk and Dmitry Muratov, prize winners in physics, chemistry, medicine and economics — a total of 30 people.
