Poland and the Baltic states want to build a defense line on the border with Belarus and Russia

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia called on the European Union to build a defense line along the border with Russia and Belarus to protect the EU from military threats and other harmful actions from Moscow, Reuters reports.

In a letter to the President of the European Union, the leaders of the four countries bordering Russia and Belarus said that the project, designed to protect the Union of 27 countries with a population of 450 million people, would also require financial support from all members. The proposal will be discussed at the summit in Brussels, which begins today, June 27.

Some EU diplomats estimated the cost of building such a defense line on the ground along the 700-kilometer EU border with Russia and Belarus at about 2.5 billion euros.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a plan to strengthen the border with Belarus and Russia. The plan was codenamed ”East Shield.” The Polish authorities plan to spend 10 billion zlotys on it.
