“Reporters Without Borders” (RSF) have announced that it has filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) about “unprecedented repression” of journalists by Belarusian dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka.
RSF has called on ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan to investigate alleged crimes against humanity in Belarus against journalists who, according to them, are “systematically persecuted.”
The international human rights organization “Reporters Without Borders” said it has documented the arbitrary arrests of almost 400 journalists since August 2020, with 43 journalists still in prisons in Belarus.
Repression by the authorities forced many Belarusian reporters to flee to Poland and Lithuania, RSF notes, adding that “forced expulsion itself qualifies as a crime against humanity.”
The alleged actions of the authorities “clearly constitute a crime against humanity in the form of imprisonment, persecution and forced displacement of Belarusian journalists for their work,” the RSF statement said.
