“A number of convicted opponents of the Belarusian authorities may be released in the near future,” Lukashenka was quoted as saying at a solemn meeting on the occasion of July 3 by TASS.
As RIA Novosti clarifies, Lukashenka said that in the coming days seriously ill people, especially those with cancer, and participants of the 2020 protests convicted in Belarus, may be released.
As of July 2, there are 1,409 political prisoners in Belarus recognized by the human rights community, while the actual number of those convicted for political reasons may be higher.
Some political prisoners have serious health problems, while they usually do not receive the necessary medical care.
