The meeting between Trump and Zelensky: a diplomatic trap or a political spectacle?

The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Wolodymyr Zelensky, which took place on Friday evening in the Oval Office, continues to provoke fierce discussions among experts.

Many political scientists call it a pre-planned trap, the purpose of which was to discredit Zelensky.

Former diplomat Pavel Matsukevich analyzed the incident from the point of view of diplomatic language and protocol.

“The problem is that the fact that we saw this altercation, we shouldn’t have seen it. It was all supposed to stay behind closed doors. It is absolutely obvious that there are difficulties in mutual understanding between Ukraine and the United States (the Trump administration). The goals that the Ukrainian delegation obviously set for themselves when they traveled to the United States for these negotiations have not been achieved. It is unlikely to say that it was staged. It is important, of course, how all this will be perceived in the United States, by Americans. The United States is trying to find a common language with Russia,” the expert says.

According to Pavel Matsukevich, despite all the political and diplomatic differences, all parties to the conflict – the United States, Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, which is now economically tied to Russia’s military economy – are ultimately interested in an early peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine.
