Tsikhanouskaya proposed to create a group to document human rights violations in Belarus

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held a briefing for the delegation of the European Parliament in Brussels. During her speech, she proposed to create a task force under the leadership of the European Union, which will document human rights violations in Belarus. In turn, the EU will spend 30 million euros to support the Belarusian democratic movement.

“The EU will continue to play a key role in shaping the future of Belarus,” Tsikhanouskaya said. She voiced several key suggestions. Including those concerning Belarusian political prisoners.

“To raise awareness about political prisoners through international campaigns. Provide legal assistance to prisoners and their families through international organizations. Create an EU-led task force to document human rights violations,” Tsikhanouskaya said.

She also offered to support the efforts of democratic forces in relation to the so-called presidential elections in 2025. “Categorically deny these “elections” legitimacy,” Tsikhanouskaya said.

The European Union will spend 30 million euros to support the Belarusian democratic movement. The new aid package was announced by the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos at the high-level conference “Together with the People of Belarus”, which was held on December 12 at the European Parliament building in Brussels.

“This is a concrete expression of our solidarity. She has helped, for example, provide legal and medical support to more than 3,000 victims of repression, provide scholarships to more than 3,000 students and support thousands of businesses in exile,” she said. According to Kos, the total amount of EU support from 2020 will amount to 170 million euros.
