U.S. Senator Roger Wicker
The founders of the Free Belarus Caucus in the U.S. Senate, Gene Shagin and Roger Wicker, asked the United States Mission in the United Nations to support the application of the Belarusian democratic forces for permanent observer status in the United Nations.
The senators drew the attention of the American Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, that since 1946 the organization has allowed parties that are not its members to participate in the sessions and work of the General Assembly. This practice, according to the parliamentarians, “helps to increase the authority of those who believe in the international rules-based order.”
“On behalf of more than 1,500 political prisoners held in prison by the authoritarian regime in Belarus, and in order for the voice of the people of Belarus to be heard by the international community, we strongly ask the US mission to the United Nations to support the application of the Belarusian democratic movement for permanent observer status,” the authors of the letter noted, quoted by “Pozirk”.
