Mogilev historian Aliaksei Batsyukou presented his new book “The Mahiliou Tsunami”, dedicated to one of the worst man-made disasters in the history of Belarus.
The tragedy occurred on April 10, 1942, when a dam burst on the Dubravenka River caused flooding in Mahiliou, which went down in history as the Mahiliou Tsunami.
“This story was recorded in the collective memory of Mogilev residents, it remained, people worried a lot. And there are many people who are witnesses, and those who have heard about such testimonies. It was surprising that this tragedy was not mentioned in the history of Mogilev. I started looking at materials from this period in the Mahiliou Regional Archive and noticed that there is a large array of documents freely available there. I processed them,” says Aliaksei Batsyukou.
In his book, Batsyukou analyzes the scale of the tragedy based on historical sources and documents. He claims that about 250 people became victims of the disaster. In addition, the publication presents 86 unique photographs, including the first shots after the dam burst and color photographs of the destroyed city.
The book can be purchased at the Knihauka bookstore of the Yanushkevich publishing house, with worldwide delivery.
