
In the annual global “The Human Freedom Index” for 2024, Belarus was at the end of the ranking – in 140th place out of 165, between Russia, which in 2023-2024 immediately slipped to 16 positions (139th place) and Congo (141st place).
Only Islamic and African countries, as well as China and Venezuela, are below Belarus in the 2024 ranking.
Belarus ranks last in the regional group of Eastern European countries. Estonia, the Czech Republic and Latvia are among the leaders in Eastern Europe.
Experts rated the personal freedom of citizens in Belarus the worst, while Belarus’ position in the ranking is slightly better in terms of economic freedoms.
Experts see the biggest problems in Belarus by criteria such as “expression of opinion and dissemination of information,” as well as “associations, associations and civil society.” Belarus also has weak positions on religious freedom and the rule of law.
As for economic freedoms, Belarus has the highest score according to the criterion of “reliability of money” (we are talking about inflation). The worst situation is with property rights.
But, according to the authors of the rating, everything is good in Belarus in the field of freedom of relations (we are talking about same-sex relationships, divorce, etc.).
