Belarusian woman punished by Polish court for espionage

A Polish court has sentenced a former activist from Baranovichi Darya Astapenka, whose detention became known in January. Then it was reported that the girl was detained by the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) at the end of December 2024 on suspicion of working for the Belarusian KGB. But now she is at large.

The media wrote that she began cooperating with the committee in 2017. Later she came to Poland, where she offered herself as a volunteer to various Belarusian organizations.

Astapenka tried to establish contacts with diaspora activists, infiltrate leading Belarusian organizations in Poland, offering them her volunteer help, collected information about the activities of the “Pospolite ruszenie” in Bialystok, as well as about Belarusian volunteers in Ukraine and those who help them.

One day, Darya Astapenka, in a drunken state, told herself that she worked for the KGB. This information was transmitted to ABW. They found supporting materials in the girl’s phone. She was charged with espionage.

According to the resource “My country Belarus”, Astapenka went to cooperate with the Polish services. As a result, she was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison for espionage. At the same time, months of detention were counted.

At the same time, the court canceled the preventive measure in the form of detention: “The court decided to release her. The resolution was sent to the pre-trial detention center, and if there are no grounds for further detention out of attention to another case, Daria A. is now at large””
