Bialystok commemorates the victims of the Holocaust

Events dedicated to the 82nd anniversary of the February action in the Bialystok ghetto were held in the city. This year, the organizers paid special attention to the memory of 1,200 Jewish children who were taken from their parents in February 1943 and held in a building on Fabryczna Str., 10.

“It is important to participate in this event. It is important for people interested in the history of Bialystok. It is important for every Bialystochanin who is looking for a part of our history. There have been big changes in our city. We need to remember about those residents who are no longer there and why they are not there,” says Pawel Chomiuk, a participant in the joint march.

“We remember the anniversary of the events when the liquidation of the ghetto in Bialystok began. We are learning to understand where we come from, that these were also the residents of our city who created its well-being, created factories, built houses, lived here, were born and died,” said Jaroslaw Parzyszek, a participant in the event, a representative of the Zamenhof Foundation.

As part of the official events, a memorial ceremony was held, which was attended by representatives of the city government, public organizations and residents of Bialystok. Laying of memorial stones during a joint procession and screening of the documentary “Kiriath Bialystok. The sketches for the Bialystochan saga” have become key moments in perpetuating the memory of the victims.
