Poland plans to strengthen the fence on the border with Belarus by the end of the year. The possibility of building a second fence line is also being considered, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Poland Czeslaw Mroczek said on TVP Info.
“By the end of this year, we will strengthen the existing fence. Next year we will build the road network necessary for the effective operation of the border guard service,” he said. “The strengthening of the fence “has already begun,” Mroczek stressed.
The Minister believes that the existing barriers are not enough to deter illegal migrants. With the help of a car jack, metal poles can be bent in 20 seconds. Instead, the reinforcement of the fence will involve the installation of transverse metal beams.
The electronic control system will be strengthened. This will cost the Polish budget about $250 million. The final decision on the construction of the second fence line will be made by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
