The draft EU budget after 2027 was presented in Bialystok. In addition to government representatives, the press conference was attended by entrepreneurs from the border region, who asked about the opening of border crossings and the economic prospects of the region.
Bogdan Dyjuk, a representative of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, noted that the reopening of some checkpoints depends on the political situation and security.
“The Podlaskie voivodeship turned out to be closed at the border due to the situation created by the Belarusian side by organizing illegal migration on the Polish-Belarusian border. I am in favor of opening at least one border crossing, even a forge, even Beaver fields. Of course, it was better for us, as for the region, to open a forge, since the main connections were established through it,” he said.
Entrepreneurs expressed concern about the eastern shield and the expansion of the buffer zone. Bogdan Dyjuk noted that this is a security measure, but the processes of resettlement of local residents are a common Polish phenomenon.:
“According to data from recent years, demographics are very bad for the border areas. Young people are looking for their future in life in other parts of the voivodeship, or the country, or Europe. In the southern and southeastern gminas of Podlaskie voivodeship, the demographic crisis is the greatest compared to all Polish municipalities,” Dyjuk said.
Businesses are concerned about increased controls and the closure of the border, which harms trade. Dyjuk assured that the authorities will seek EU support. These and other issues will be discussed during the visit of EU representatives to Podlasie in May.
