The premiere of the program of the Belarusian Radio Racja ”A place for the press” in Belarusian on the waves of Latvian Radio 4 took place on July 4. Now this program will be played every Thursday at 18:05 Polish time and at 19:05 Latvian and Belarusian time.
“We are a channel of the Latvian Public Radio. We strive to work in the interests of society, not politics. We have such a concept as a public order – there is always the idea that different languages should sound on the waves of Latvian Radio 4 – the languages of those peoples who live in Latvia. We have always had Belarusian broadcasts, or rather, it was one Svitanak broadcast. She was prepared by the forces of our national cultural society and talked about local events of the cultural plan for the preservation of native culture, native language. But, of course, after 2020 we wanted to increase our Belarusian broadcasting. And now we have such an opportunity, including thanks to you, thanks to the program “A place for the Press,” Anna Stroja, editor-in-chief of Radio 4, told the Radio Racja.
According to her, Latvia is now very insistent on the demand of both politicians and part of society to stop the dominance of the Russian language. “We have about 54.5 thousand Belarusians in Latvia, and less than 1% speak Belarusian in their families. Nevertheless, we really want the Belarusian language to sound, as it has a great symbolic meaning for us,” the editor-in-chief noted.
When asked Where to look for Latvian Radio 4, Anna Stroja replied: “I would like to advertise the platform of the United Latvian Public Media -now it is called rus.lsm.lv. but soon the portal will change its name, it will be called lsm. plus. And there you can find our radio and television””
The waves on which Latvian Radio 4 can be heard on the Latvian-Belarusian border are 88.7 (Daugavpils) and 94.5 (Skaista).
