The XXI General Congress of Polish Historians opened in Bialystok

Bialystok is hosting the participants of Poland’s largest historical Congress for the first time. It is timed to coincide with a tragic date for Polish history – September 17, 1939.

More than 800 people are taking part in the congress.

The importance of the event was noted by Karol Polejowski, Deputy President of the Institute of National Memory. “This is a very important event. It is a celebration of historical community. The Institute of National Memory is also here in Bialystok. We will meet in Bialystok on September 17, the 85th anniversary of the Soviet aggression against Poland. And this topic will also be considered,” he said.

The deputy of the Podlaskie Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, Professor Karol Lopatecki, speaks about the historical anniversary of September 17. “ September 17 is an important date for the city of Bialystok. It should be remembered that Bialystok fell under the Soviet occupation zone. But German troops came here at the very beginning in 1939. There are even such photos as officers of the German troops handing over the city to Soviet control””

As part of the opening ceremony, the address of the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda to the participants of the congress was read out. Accordingly, the degree of honorary Doctor of Bialystok University was awarded. Ahead is the work of scientific sections, a book fair, the opening of an exhibition and discussions.
