
Polish servicemen involved in the operation “Safety Podlasie” to strengthen the protection of the border with Belarus received gunshot wounds as a result of an accident, the Operational command of the Polish army reported.
The incident occurred near the settlement of Nowa Luka in Podlaskie voivodeship, near the Polish-Belarusian border. At about 18.45 on August 27, “during the transfer of weapons during a shift of duty, uncontrolled shots were fired from service weapons,” as a result of which a serviceman of the 1st tank battalion of the 18th mechanized Division was wounded in the leg, and his colleague in the finger, the command reported.
No third parties were involved in the incident, the report says.
The soldier wounded in the leg was given first aid on the spot, and then he was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Bialystok. The condition of the military is stable, there is no threat to life. The second serviceman was taken to the hospital in Gaynovka after first aid.
Both servicemen were involved in the operation “Safety Podlasie” to strengthen the protection of the border with Belarus.
The military gendarmerie is investigating the circumstances and causes of the incident.
