The monument to Kalinouski rebels unveiled in Vilnius

A sculptural composition in memory of Kastus Kalinouski’s rebels of 1863-1864 was inaugurated in Vilnius. The event was timed to coincide with the 160th anniversary of his execution by the Russian occupiers, Radio Liberty reports.

The sculptural composition appeared in the historical center of Vilnius on the territory of the Franciscan monastery in front of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Bronze figures of four men are placed on a wide round podium: a Franciscan monk, blessing the cause of the uprising with a cross, and the rebels themselves — Kastus Kalinouski, Zygmunt Serakowski and Tytus Dalewski (Kalinovsky is kneeling in the foreground, and Serakowski is behind him, they swear allegiance to God and the Motherland).

The monument was erected at the expense of the Polish National Fund.
