The human rights situation in Belarus remains critical

Belarusian human rights defenders have prepared an overview of the human rights situation in Belarus in February. It notes that the situation “remains critical.”

Repressions against political opponents of the regime and dissidents continue, and against this background, the Lukashenka regime demonstrates “the illusion of civil harmony and popular support for state policy.”

At least 625 cases of repression (trials and detentions) and at least 548 cases of politically motivated administrative proceedings in court are known. Judges have imposed at least 95 administrative arrests, 84 fines, and community service three times. More than 100 people – political prisoners and their relatives – were sentenced administratively for receiving food aid. There are more than 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus. Political prisoner Ihar Lednik died in February.
